Jan Paul van Hecke Continues After Head Wound Against Morocco
Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke received treatment for a head wound during the World Cup knockout match against Morocco but continued playing after medical attention.
Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke continued playing after receiving treatment for a head wound during the World Cup knockout match against Morocco.
The incident happened during a physical first half in Monterrey. Van Hecke went down after a challenge near the Moroccan goal area, with medical staff called onto the pitch.
Images from the match showed the Dutch defender bleeding from the head before receiving treatment. After the stoppage, Van Hecke was able to continue for Oranje.
Sportnieuws reported that Van Hecke was caught on the head by the studs of Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui during a corner. The same report said it was not the first heavy contact involving Van Hecke in the match, after an earlier clash with Ismael Saibari.
The Guardian’s live coverage also described an earlier moment in the first half when Van Hecke went down after taking an elbow to the chin in a late aerial challenge from Azzedine Ounahi.
Another concern after his eye injury
The head wound adds to concern around Van Hecke’s physical condition during this World Cup.
The Dutch defender had already suffered a painful eye injury earlier in the tournament during the Netherlands’ group-stage match against Japan. He continued playing then as well, despite visible swelling around the eye.
Against Morocco, Van Hecke again became one of the central figures in a highly physical match. The Round of 32 tie had already been tense from the opening minutes, with strong duels, frequent whistles and visible frustration on both sides.
Medical attention, then back into the match
The most important update is that Van Hecke did not leave the pitch immediately after treatment. He returned to the game with the Netherlands still fighting for a place in the next round.
Head wounds can look dramatic because they often bleed heavily, even when the cut itself is not always serious. Still, football’s concussion and head injury rules mean medical staff must check players carefully before they are allowed to continue.
There has not yet been an official medical update from the Dutch team at the time of writing.
For now, Van Hecke’s continuation will be seen as a positive sign for Oranje, but the incident will likely be reviewed again after the match.
The Netherlands are facing Morocco in the World Cup Round of 32, with the winner set to play Canada in the next round.
