Paid parking at 4 car parks on the edge of Dokkum was due this year. The new machines cannot be connected to the power grid, so parking there stays free for now.

Paid parking at 4 car parks on the edge of Dokkum still has not started, because the new parking machines cannot be connected to the power grid. Until they can, drivers can keep parking there for free. There is no new start date.

Delayed twice

The municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân planned to make drivers pay at the 4 car parks, which have about 600 spaces in total, from the start of this year. The start was later moved to 1 October.

The parking machines still cannot be connected because there is no room on the electricity grid, the municipality says. It points to busy schedules and waiting times at grid operator Liander.

A gap in the budget

The municipality had counted on 580,000 euros in parking income this year. It is not yet clear how it will cover the shortfall.

Parking in the centre of Dokkum is free until 11:00, according to the municipality’s parking page.
