Cheap summer train pass starts early

A cheap summer train pass in the Netherlands will start one week earlier than planned.

The subscription will begin on Monday 15 June instead of 21 June. The end date remains 1 September.

The pass will cost 49 euros per month. It allows unlimited train travel during off peak hours and at weekends. The deal is based on the NS Flex Dal Vrij subscription, which normally costs almost 128 euros per month.

The early start date is linked to the Dag van het OV, or Public Transport Day. The government says the cheaper ticket should make it easier for people to choose the train this summer.

The pass is also being promoted as a response to high fuel prices. A cheaper train option may help people take day trips without using the car.

The idea has been compared with low cost public transport experiments in other European countries. Supporters hope it will make train travel more attractive, especially for families, students and people planning summer trips inside the Netherlands.

The subscription will not make train travel free at all times. The key condition is that it applies to off peak hours and weekends. Travellers will still need to check when off peak travel starts and whether their route or travel time fits the conditions.

The government has set a maximum budget for the scheme. That means there may be a limit to how many people can use it, although it is not yet clear whether demand will reach that level.

The timing could make the pass useful for beach trips, museum visits, family days out and domestic holidays. It may also reduce some car traffic during the summer period if enough people decide to leave the car at home.

The biggest question is whether a short summer discount can change travel habits beyond the holiday season. A temporary deal can bring people back to the train, but regular ticket prices remain a concern for many travellers.

For now, the practical message is simple: people who want cheaper train travel this summer can start using the offer from 15 June.
