Lowlands — full name A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise — is the Netherlands’ largest multi-genre, multi-day camping festival. Held over three days in the third weekend of August at Walibi Holland in Biddinghuizen (Flevoland), it draws roughly 55,000 attendees who camp on-site for the duration.

What sets it apart

The musical lineup is broad and well-curated — international indie, hip-hop, electronic, rock, pop, with a deliberate skew toward acts at the inflection point of their careers. But Lowlands is more than music: it runs a full parallel programme of theatre, stand-up comedy, film screenings, literary events, scientific talks (the “Lowlands University”) and food culture. Many of the country’s prominent comedians, writers and academics treat appearances at Lowlands as professional milestones.

The festival has a near-religious annual following. Ticket allocation runs by lottery; the registration window closes within hours.

What expats should know

  • This is a camping festival. Day tickets do not exist. You camp Friday through Sunday or you don’t go.
  • Pack for any weather. Late August in Flevoland alternates between blazing sun and torrential rain inside the same afternoon.
  • Public transport runs from Lelystad and Harderwijk via dedicated festival shuttles. Driving in is possible but parking is heavily managed.
  • Cash is unnecessary. The festival uses a wristband-payment system; top up online before arrival.
