On this day On this day in 1863, slavery was abolished in the Dutch colony of Surinam, now celebrated as Ketikoti in Suriname. Known then as Dutch Guiana, Surinam was a plantation colony in the Guianas, bordered by Berbice and Cayenne. This significant event paved the way for Suriname’s journey toward independence.
