On this day On this day in 1863, slavery was abolished in the Dutch colony of Surinam, known today as Suriname. This historic event is celebrated annually as Ketikoti in independent Suriname. The colony, once a part of the Guianas, was bordered by Berbice and Cayenne and later by British Guiana.
