Sneekweek 2026

Sneekweek is a week of sailing races and street festivities that fills the Frisian town of Sneek and the lake on its doorstep every summer. The 89th edition runs from Friday 31 July to Thursday 6 August 2026, with competitive racing on the Sneekermeer from Saturday 1 August through to the finals on Thursday 6 August.

Two things happen at once. On the water, the fleet races on the Sneekermeer and the connected Poelen. On land, the town centre fills with live music, fairground attractions and terraces that stay open late into the night, while a festival tent on Starteiland carries its own programme. The Koninklijke Watersportvereniging Sneek, the royal water sports association founded in 1851, runs the racing and describes the event as the largest inshore sailing event in Europe.

What happens on the water

Racing takes place across six days on the Sneekermeer and the Poelen, the connected stretches of water around it. Starteiland, an island in the lake, is the operational heart of the regatta. The association keeps its competition centre and start tower there, alongside moorings, boat storage and a crane.

The midweek high point is Hardzeildag on Wednesday 5 August. The following day, Thursday 6 August, closes the regatta with the final races and the prize presentation. The event traditionally begins on the first Saturday in August, which is why the exact dates shift a little from year to year.

There is also a set-piece contest on Sunday 2 August, when a Holland side and a Friesland side meet in team sailing on the Sneekermeer between 17:00 and 19:30.

Entering the regatta

Registration for the 2026 edition opened on 2 June 2026 and closes on Saturday 25 July. Competitors then report in person at the Foarunder on Starteiland on Thursday 30 July, between 18:00 and 21:00, the evening before the event formally opens.

Opening night

Sneekweek opens on Friday 31 July with a ceremony at the Martinikerk in Sneek from 19:30 to 21:00. It is followed by the Vlootschouw, the fleet parade, which runs from 21:30 to 23:30 at the Waterpoort and De Kolk in the town centre. This is the part of the week most likely to appeal to people who have no intention of getting on a boat.

The next day, Saturday 1 August, the festival tent on Starteiland opens from 12:00 for the opening festival. On Sunday 2 August the same venue hosts the aftersail, from 12:00 to 23:30.

The town programme

Away from the lake, Sneek itself carries a separate programme built around seven stages of live music, fairground attractions and terrace life across the week. That side of the event is coordinated by Stichting Sneekweek, a foundation set up in May 2022. It works with the local hospitality venues that run the individual stages, the business association Ondernemend Sneek, Sneek Promotion and the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân.

No general ticket sale for the town programme is published on the official pages, and the individual stages are run by the hospitality venues that operate them.

Reaching Starteiland

Starteiland lies in the Sneekermeer and is reached by water. The association brought an electrically powered ferry into service in 2019 to improve access to the island.

The association behind it

The Koninklijke Watersportvereniging Sneek marks its 175th anniversary in 2026, the same year it stages the 89th Sneekweek. It has over 1,000 members and operates on volunteer effort. Beyond Sneekweek it organises Dutch championship regattas and, every two or three years, a European or world championship, and it also stages a second event known as the Kleine Sneekweek. It runs the Roerkoning training centre on Starteiland, which teaches sailing from beginner level upwards.

For English-speaking residents, Sneekweek is one of the clearer examples of how a Dutch sports club can anchor a town-wide public occasion. The racing is a serious national fixture with its own entry deadline, and the town programme runs alongside it under a separate organisation.
