The Almere datacenter fire that broke out at NorthC Datacenters on Wednesday has sent thick plumes of smoke rolling across the Flevoland city and triggered widespread service disruptions for organisations that depend on the facility’s infrastructure. The incident quickly escalated into what emergency services classified as a major fire, drawing a large response from regional crews and raising fresh questions about the resilience of the Netherlands’ critical digital infrastructure.

Almere Datacenter Fire Forces Emergency Response and NL-Alert

The fire ignited in a section of the NorthC Datacenters complex that houses essential technical equipment, including the facility’s backup power supply systems. Because the backup power infrastructure was directly involved, staff were unable to switch to redundant systems, meaning any servers dependent on that power segment went dark almost immediately.

Smoke from the blaze became visible across a wide area of Almere, a city of roughly 230,000 residents located about 30 kilometres east of Amsterdam in the province of Flevoland. Authorities issued an NL-Alert, the Dutch government’s national cell-broadcast warning system, advising residents to close windows and doors and to switch off mechanical ventilation systems to prevent smoke from entering homes and businesses.

A crashtender, a heavy-duty fire-suppression vehicle normally stationed at airports for aviation emergencies, was deployed from nearby Lelystad Airport. Crews required the specialised vehicle because the facility contained a large diesel fuel tank that needed continuous cooling to prevent the risk of a secondary explosion or escalation of the fire.

Emergency services established a safety perimeter around the datacenter, and residents in adjacent streets were advised to remain indoors until authorities gave the all-clear. Air-quality monitors were placed in the surrounding area to track smoke composition, a standard procedure when industrial sites containing fuel or chemical storage are involved in a fire.

Almere Datacenter Fire Knocks Utrecht University and Infomedics Offline

Among the organisations immediately affected, Utrecht University, one of the Netherlands’ largest and most research-intensive universities, with more than 36,000 students, confirmed that several of its servers hosted at the NorthC facility became inaccessible following the fire. University IT staff indicated that core academic and administrative systems reliant on that infrastructure experienced outages, affecting staff and students attempting to access digital resources.

Utrecht University has not yet confirmed how long a full recovery might take, but IT teams were said to be assessing the damage and exploring failover options. For a research institution that operates continuous data-collection programmes and cloud-connected laboratory equipment, even a short outage can have measurable consequences for ongoing projects.

Infomedics, a Dutch company specialising in healthcare invoicing and patient communication services, also reported significant operational disruptions. The company handles billing and messaging flows for a large number of healthcare providers across the Netherlands, meaning the communication breakdowns it experienced have downstream consequences for clinics, practitioners, and patients awaiting correspondence about invoices or appointments.

Neither organisation disclosed the precise financial or operational cost of the outage at the time of publication. Both confirmed they were working with their own IT and business-continuity teams to restore services as quickly as possible.

The incident underscores a broader vulnerability acknowledged by Dutch authorities and the Dutch national government’s cybersecurity and critical infrastructure policy framework: physical threats to datacenters, whether fire, flooding, or power failure, can produce cascading digital outages that ripple across sectors far removed from the original incident site.

The Netherlands has become a significant hub for European datacenter capacity, owing to its dense fibre-optic network, favourable energy access, and geographic position. According to data published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the country hosts a disproportionately large share of European internet exchange and colocation infrastructure relative to its size. That concentration amplifies the potential impact of any single facility going offline.

Industry experts have long argued that operators of critical datacenters should maintain geographically distributed redundancy, ensuring that the failure of one site does not wholly disable a client’s operations. Wednesday’s fire at NorthC will likely reignite those conversations, particularly among public-sector clients such as universities and healthcare administrators who may not have invested in secondary hosting arrangements.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Investigators from the fire brigade and, potentially, the Dutch Safety Board will examine the site once the blaze is fully extinguished and the area is deemed safe for entry. NorthC Datacenters had not issued a public statement detailing how the fire started as of the time this article was written.

What Happens Next

Once firefighters fully extinguish the blaze, forensic fire investigators will enter the building to establish the origin and cause. NorthC is expected to publish a formal incident report, and affected clients will receive damage assessments that determine whether data loss occurred alongside the service interruptions.

Utrecht University and Infomedics are both working through business-continuity protocols. The university may activate alternative cloud environments to restore student and staff access, while Infomedics will prioritise restoring communication pipelines that affect time-sensitive healthcare billing cycles.

Local authorities in Almere are expected to follow up on air-quality readings to confirm that smoke exposure levels did not exceed safe thresholds for residents in nearby streets. The NL-Alert issued during the incident will be officially rescinded once the site is secured and ventilation risks have passed.

The wider Dutch datacenter sector will be watching closely. Any significant finding about the fire’s origin, whether related to electrical failure, cooling system malfunction, or another cause, could prompt industry-wide reviews of fire suppression and power backup standards across colocation facilities throughout the country.
